Nicole Kidman recalled her marriage to Tom Cruise during a 2016 interview on PEOPLE’s The Jess Cagle Interview. She shared, “Tom really supported me, and I’m so grateful to him for that.” Kidman further added, “[It was] a beautiful marriage and all of those things that came out of it. Two beautiful children. The rest is history.”

She and Cruise are parents to two children: daughter Isabella and son Connor. She also recalled meeting Cruise on the set of Days of Thunder, which she called one of the most memorable moments in her career. She shared, “I remember walking in, I remember being so nervous and seeing Tom Cruise drive up in a Porsche, I think it was.”

She shared that her “jaw dropped” at the sight of the actor. She shared that she auditioned in front of industry big shots like Tony Scott, Don Simpson, Jerry Bruckheimer, and Robert Towne. In the presence of these legends, she was convinced she would never land the role as a newbie. However, they were impressed, and she landed the role.

Kidman and Cruise’s love blossomed on the sets of that movie, and the couple swiftly got married in 1990. It was a high-profile relationship that couldn’t escape the paparazzi. Their married life seemed like the ideal Hollywood love story until it wasn’t. The relationship fell apart after eleven years of marriage, with Cruise filing for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences.

While she had fond memories of her life with Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman also opened up about the harrowing divorce from Cruise. She revealed that she was devastated by the divorce and couldn’t really celebrate her Oscar win in 2003 for The Hours.

In Dave Krager’s book 50 Oscar Nights, Kidman opened up about her struggles in her personal life. She shared, “I was struggling with things in my personal life, yet my professional life was going so well” (via InStyle).

Kidman shared that she was in no mood to attend Vanity Fair’s Oscar afterparty at the time, but she was convinced by everyone to go. When she attended the party, Kidman shared that she was overwhelmed by the celebrations, especially considering her sad circumstances. She shared:

So I literally walked in, carried it around, was completely overwhelmed, emotional, shaking, and I didn’t enjoy it. I was almost apologetic, which is so stupid. I wish I could have enjoyed it more.

Kidman further shared that she went home and ordered takeout, spending her time with her family in the Beverly Hills Hotel. It was Cruise who walked away from this marriage as well, leaving Kidman in shock as she was “very dependent” on him (via The Mirror). Kidman later shared:

I thought our life together was perfect. It took me a very long time to heal. It was a shock to my system. We were in a bubble, just the two of us. We became very dependent on one another. I was reeling with Tom. I would have gone to the ends of the earth for him…. I was totally smitten – I fell madly, passionately in love.

During an interview with Vanity Fair, she shared that she was “madly, passionately in love,” to the point that she was ready to derail her plans for the future to pursue the romance. She shared:

I was consumed by it, willingly. And I was desperate to have a baby with him. I didn’t care if we were married. That’s what I wish I’d done.

According to The Mirror, reports suggested that Cruise left after their disagreement about Scientology. However, Kidman never commented on this report.

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman’s Opposing Views on Monogamy

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman went their separate ways in 2001 after a decade-long marriage. It was Cruise’s second and Kidman’s first marriage. Interestingly, a couple of years before their split, they famously had a difference of opinion about monogamy.

Kidman was clear about her stance in her interview with Newsweek, “Monogamy is not a natural way of being” (via Today). However, Cruise didn’t agree with her when asked about her statement. Cruise shared that he believed in monogamy and the concept of a family unit. He even criticized the then-state of a family unit, calling it “disintegrated.” He shared:

I believe in monogamy. I want and I love relationships. I believe in the family unit. It is important, the family unit. Look at where the family unit has gone. It’s disintegrated.

It was not just polygamy that the Mission: Impossible actor had a problem with. He rejected psychiatry and, hence, traditional marriage counseling. The only kind of marriage counseling he believed in was the one in Scientology, claiming that it “actually helps to put people back in communication with one another.”
