It only made $108k (via World of Reel), and its current worldwide total sits at $1.95 million (via The Numbers). Now that’s brutal, considering how much effort Sweeney put into portraying Christy Martin.

The film had some early buzz and was even praised during its TIFF premiere, but the numbers have painted a brutal picture for Christy. So, why did Sweeney, who’s currently amidst the Great Jeans controversy, suffer such an unfortunate fate at the box office?
Why Did Sydney Sweeney’s Christy Get Knocked Out at the Box Office?
The downfall of Christy is a result of several things, and Sydney Sweeney was left without the comeback that fans expected. The first hit was insane box office competition from movies like Predator: Badlands and Die My Love.
Christy also had a marketing problem because there was only one major trailer and limited promotion; we aren’t exactly sure what they were counting on. Also, the content of the movie doesn’t help either because even though Sweeney was great and dedicated herself to the physical transformation, there were pacing issues and other technical flaws.
And though Sweeney is popular, her name doesn’t guarantee a significant box-office draw. She might be the breakout star of Euphoria and a viral sensation, but she can’t carry an entire film on her shoulders just yet.
And finally, it’s the bitter truth that sports biopics just aren’t a profitable genre in 2025 because the pandemic has largely changed people’s taste when it comes to watching movies in theatres.

In the months leading up to Christy’s release, Sydney Sweeney became the centre of one of the year’s strangest controversies. Her American Eagle ad featured a narration that stated, “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.”
Now, because Sweeney is blonde and blue-eyed, many interpreted that the ad was about racial superiority. When she had the chance to address the controversy in an interview with GQ, Sweeney made it worse by not really saying much at all.
I’ve always believed that I’m not here to tell people what to think… When I have an issue that I want to speak about, people will hear.
