Gintama‘s latest movie, Gintama Movie 3: Yoshiwara in Flames (IMDb rating as of August 28, 2026: 8.7/10), was finally released on OTT platforms for fans to watch worldwide. The movie offered some of the best animations ever, comparable to shonen giants like Demon Slayer, especially with the fiery action scenes, along with classic Gintama comedy.
However, all of that was nothing compared to the emotions this movie carried. After watching the movie, you might have some questions. If you do, this article is your final stop for all of them, as we are going to recap the entire movie while also answering them. Let’s dive in.
Why Did Seita Want to Buy Hinowa?

One day, when casually strolling the streets, Gintoki gets pickpocketed by a kid. However, unfortunately for the kid, he too has been pickpocketed in return. When confronted, the kid, Seita, reveals that he is trying to buy the most expensive and most beautiful woman in the entire underground district where men go for pleasure.
Otose ends up giving him a job at her snack house when she finds out that he actually thinks Hinowa, the very woman he wants to buy, is actually his mother. Gintoki, now curious, actually visits the underground district to find out what has been going on, but gets roped into conflict with Yoshiwara’s guardians as he makes plans to reunite Seita with his mother.
Seita’s Real Mother Revealed by Housen

Housen is the man who runs everything in that district and is referred to as the night king. He stopped Gintoki and Seita from entering Hinowa’s room, while the whole flashback showed how Hinowa gave birth to Seita, tried to run away, but actually stayed behind after giving him to someone else.
While Seita was trying to open the door, Hinowa kept telling him to go away, “You’re not my son”, she kept saying in a painful tone. To us viewers, and even Seita, it looked like she was simply saying all that to send him away. However, Housen then reveals that Seita’s real mother died after giving birth to him, as her health was simply not good enough.
Hinowa was actually one of the other women who took care of Seita and fed him so that he wouldn’t die. Seita learns this and gets visibly upset, but Gintoki encourages him that it doesn’t matter if Hinowa is his blood mother or not; Seita gets to decide who his mother is.
Gintoki’s Plan to Defeat Housen

Housen, being one of the most powerful aliens, was simply too much for Gintoki to defeat. However, he did have an obvious weakness, just like other Yato tribe members: sunlight. Yato tribe members cannot handle sunlight, which is also why Housen’s entire empire was underground. Gintoki knew this and arranged for the entire ceiling to open, which started evaporating him like a vampire.
However, here is the twist: he always wanted exactly this. Hinowa, ever since she was a child, wanted to show Housen the real sun, because she felt sad that he couldn’t be under it. Deep down, Housen realized that he also wanted to simply soak in the sun like a normal old man. However, his biology wouldn’t allow him. In the end, he got to see Hinowa crying for him as well, and he died while being under her shade.
