With Spider-Man: Brand New Day set to hit theaters on July 31, anticipation for Tom Holland‘s fourth solo outing as the web-slinger is at a fever pitch. The film picks up four years after the emotional climax of Spider-Man: No Way Home, with Peter Parker left completely forgotten by the people he loves.

But it turns out Holland wasn’t just showing up to wear the suit this time. In a recent conversation with Polygon, the actor revealed he actually had a hand in shaping the story before it was even written.

Most interesting of all, he hinted that one of his own ideas fed directly into a mystery the movie is still guarding closely. When asked about which Brand New Day villain or minor character he was most excited about, Holland shared:

It is still to this day the biggest mystery of what this movie is and what it’s about. I sat down with a very good friend of mine and my brother, and we were pitching ideas back and forth. This idea came up — and I cannot talk about it because it is still a huge mystery. For me, bringing that kernel of an idea to the writer’s room was very exciting.

It’s a small comment, but for fans it opens up a big question. What exactly did Holland pitch, and could it be tied to the film’s most talked-about secret?

Tom Holland Was Creatively Involved in Spider-Man: Brand New Day

For the first time in his run as Peter Parker, Tom Holland was invited into the writers’ room. He has spoken openly about how this movie marked the earliest he’s ever been brought into the creative process, joining the writers before a single page of the script existed.

That’s a notable shift for an actor who, in the past, largely worked with a screenplay that was already locked. This time, his voice helped guide the direction of the film from the ground up. A big part of what Holland brought to the table was the perspective of the fans. He opened up about his inclusion in the creative process during an interview with Empire.

He shared that he and the producers of the movie would “meet once every two weeks to pitch ideas and discuss our ambitions and what we wanted to try and do.” He further delved into details about his pitch, which was called “Spider-Puberty.” He explained the idea, “What happens if Peter Parker is losing control and things are changing?” However, his original version of this idea was shot down. Holland said:

‘Spider-Puberty’ was my tagline pitch to the studio, which was immediately shot down. But they liked the kernel of the idea, and it grew into what we have in the movie now.

We would love to see how Holland’s contribution would impact the plot of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. And we want to hear more about the mystery that he helped develop once the movie is out in theaters. Some fans wonder whether it has something to do with Sadie Sink’s mystery character.

Sadie Sink’s Role Remains the Movie’s Biggest Mystery

While Tom Holland never reveals the mystery idea he helped pitch, fans have a guess. The single most guarded mystery in Brand New Day is the identity of Sadie Sink‘s character, and it’s tempting to wonder whether Holland’s pitch played a part in how she fits into the story. However, it is just speculation now.

What’s certain is how tightly the movie is protecting Sink’s role. Marvel and Sony have refused to confirm who she’s playing, keeping her out of the marketing entirely. Sink herself has leaned into the fun, recently sharing a video in which she offered fans “three exclusive, confirmed answers.”

She joked that she isn’t Spider-Man, isn’t Aunt May, and can definitely confirm she’s in the movie, before adding that fans will have to head to theaters to learn the rest. The most popular fan theory is that Sink is playing Jean Grey, the beloved X-Men telepath. If it’s true, it also means that Sadie Sink will probably have an MCU future beyond this movie.

Do you think Holland’s mystery pitch has something to do with Sink’s character? Let us know in the comments below!
