Letterboxd is extending its services beyond just being a movie diary for users. The beloved social media platform, which amasses over 20 million registered users, is now eying to incorporate a TVOD (transactional video-on-demand) service for its users, helping them discover exciting movies and emerging filmmakers from around the globe.
Originally announced at the Cannes Film Festival, the social media platform recently announced that the feature will become available for users starting next month.

What makes this catalog different from other platforms that have diluted the market is that users won’t have to deal with the trouble of endless scrolling through an algorithm-driven list to make up their mind. Instead, they can resort to the platform’s dedicated shelves, including festival standouts, long-watchlisted titles, restorations and rediscoveries, and Limited-time drops

It’s important to note that these shelves are curated from millions of watchlists and reviews from users of the platform. In essence, these lists are made by the users for the users, and will be offered at a limited rental price, which would vary from region to region. Speaking of this initiative, earlier this year, CEO Matthew Buchanan added (via THR):
Every day, we see members recommending films to each other, adding to their watchlists and hungry to discover more. Letterboxd Video Store is our way of delivering for those film lovers, creating a dedicated space for films that deserve an audience
Although an exact release drop remains unclear, in the current state of streaming, this could shape up to be a far superior alternative for movie fans, and one that we desperately need.

Even though streaming platforms, in their infancy, were seen as a convenient alternative to cable, as they allowed users to consume media without the hassle of ads at a low cost, the landscape has shifted significantly since then.

With major studios diving into the realm of streaming, which has contributed to diluted libraries amid rising costs, it appears we’re back to square one. In the current state, Letterboxd’s new service has the potential to become a modern-day equivalent of Blockbuster digitally.
Moreover, not only will the curated lists be entirely user-driven as opposed to being algorithmically pushed to keep the viewer hooked on slop, but users will be able to recommend titles for inclusion through the tag, #Letterboxd-video-store. While major services like Netflix and Disney+ seem too big to fail, despite their controversial practices, hopefully, this new step from Letterboxd will encourage movie lovers to discover movies from across the globe.
