Ricky Gervais has finally put his worldview in cartoon form. Alley Cats landed on Netflix on August 7, 2026, all six episodes at once, each running under 20 minutes. Ricky Gervais created it, wrote it, directed it alongside Elliot Dear, and voices Gus, the loudmouth who thinks he runs the group.
The setup is simple. A handful of feral cats share one room in a falling-apart house, swear at each other constantly, and argue about death between meals. Then they find a lost kitten in a graveyard and decide to get her home.
What follows is six episodes of filth and philosophy in equal measure. And the ending is far sadder, and far kinder, than the tone suggests.
What Happens When the Alley Cats Find Kitten’s Home?
The search for Kitten’s home takes the whole season. Kitten, voiced by Jo Hartley, turns up in a graveyard in the first episode with no idea where she came from, and the clues arrive in pieces. In Episode 5, she remembers a church and a vicar who used to give her milk. She remembers a big road, and a bridge she crossed. By Episode 6, she also remembers a playground.
The gang eventually walks the route in the final episode, past the playground, the bridge, and the church, to find Kitten’s home. Gus goes ahead and looks through the window while the others wait. Inside, Kitten’s family is fussing over a brand new kitten. Gus hears them saying the new one is even cuter.
Even Gus is gutted to find out that the family easily replaced Kitten. So he decides to lie to everyone else. He tells Kitten that the family moved away. Kitten takes it better than anyone expects. She says she is not upset, because she already has a new family.
As they leave and when they are alone, Kitten asks Gus what the new kitten looked like. It is the best line in the show. She worked it out. She lets him keep his lie anyway, because she can see he needs it more than she does. The cats set out to take Kitten home and ended up being her home.
Did Gus and Lara Get Together at the End?

They do, and it takes Gus five episodes of running away first. Gus meets Lara in Episode 3 while the group is knee-deep in a conversation about family. She has a boyfriend, a thug who flattens Gus without much effort. But Lara notices something in the way Gus takes the beating. He is kind, and he is funny, and he does not stop talking.
Episode 4 gets them on an actual date, arranged after a long back-and-forth with Ponce full of jokes that would not survive a daylight reading. Gus fumbles his way through the evening, and it works anyway. Even after their lovely graveyard first date, Gus keeps his distance from Lara.
In Episode 5, Lara calls him out directly over his refusal to commit to anything. In Episode 6, she invites him to a dance, and he turns her down flat, later admitting to Kitten that he is old and would look stupid out there. Gus is scared of being seen wanting something.
However, in the final moments of the show, he shows up to the party and dances with her. It is a small moment, and the show plays it that way. But it lands right next to the reveal about Kitten’s family, and both scenes make the same argument. You do not get the life you were supposed to have. You get the one you decide to walk into.
What Did Each of the Deaths in the Show Mean?

Death is the spine of this show, and it starts early. In Episode 1, their friend Ralfy crosses the road to greet them and is hit by a car mid-sentence. The gang stands around his body and talks, plainly, about how a cat can die and no one notices. It shows that nothing about the alley cat life is dignified, and nothing pauses for it.
Episode 2 brings Old Pete, sixteen years old and barely able to move, about to be taken to the vet. He knows it is a one-way trip and says so. It rattles Kitten, who admits she wants to live forever. Gus, of all cats, gives her the show’s only real comfort, saying that everyone lives forever in the memory of whoever knew them.
Episode 5 pays that off. Gus reaches his dying mother, and Kitten introduces herself as his daughter. There is a beautiful montage about Gus’s childhood before his mother dies. And Gus grieves by getting high. Even high, he can talk wisdom to Kitten about death.
Then there is Fang. After a boy kicks Kitten at the playground, Fang shoves him off the top of the skatepark and feels nothing about it, later telling Puke the kid’s neck broke. The show talks so casually about human deaths before actually showing one. It shows that the cats treat a human death exactly the way humans treat theirs. The jokes are offensive and cruel, but that’s intentional.
