It’s time to celebrate, gamers: GTA 6 pre-orders have finally gone live. That’s right — you can now secure your copy and get ready to explore Vice City alongside Jason and Lucia when the game launches on November 19, 2026.
However, in revealing the GTA 6 Ultimate Edition, Rockstar Games also appears to have hinted at a crucial detail about the game’s narrative structure: it may feature a chapter-based system. Players who’ve experienced Red Dead Redemption 2 may already be familiar with this format, but for those who aren’t, here’s what we mean.
GTA 6 Might Introduce Chapters Like Red Dead Redemption 2

To begin with, do yourself a favor and head to the GTA 6 page on the official Rockstar Games website. There, you’ll find the game’s Ultimate Edition. Clicking on it reveals everything included in this package, but one detail stands out.
Near the end of the first page, Rockstar mentions that there will be “new items uncovered behind each chapter.” One might assume Rockstar is referring to the traditional mission-based structure, as the developer hasn’t revealed or confirmed any changes to the game’s story progression.
However, why wouldn’t Rockstar borrow one of the most successful storytelling elements from its smash hit, Red Dead Redemption 2? As many players will remember, the Wild West game was divided into six chapters and two epilogue sections, creating a story that stretched well beyond 40 hours. This chapter-based format allowed Rockstar to carefully pace the narrative, build tension over time, and deliver some of its most emotional moments. Many factors contributed to making Red Dead Redemption 2’s story so memorable, but its chapter-based progression was clearly one of the standout elements.
It’s important to keep in mind that the Grand Theft Auto franchise has not traditionally used a chapter-based system. Every mainline entry so far has pushed players from one mission to the next. So, if GTA 6 ends up adopting a chapter system similar to Red Dead Redemption 2, it would be a first for the franchise. Considering how well the approach worked in Rockstar’s Wild West epic, bringing it to GTA 6 would make a lot of sense and could give players another cinematic narrative experience.
As of now, Rockstar hasn’t confirmed or revealed how long the GTA 6 story will be, and how it’s going to unfold, but it’s likely that we’ll reveal more about the structure as we get closer to launch.
Rockstar Games Confirms That GTA 6 is a “Single-Player” Experience For Now

Don’t get your hopes up if you’re planning to jump into GTA 6 with friends on day one. On the official PlayStation page for the game, Rockstar has addressed this directly in the FAQ section. When asked whether GTA 6 includes any multiplayer modes or online features, the answer is clear: the game is currently being positioned as a single-player experience. In other words, there will be no online component available at launch.
However, those who’ve played previous Rockstar Games titles know this is a familiar pattern. Looking at Red Dead Redemption 2, the game debuted on October 26, 2018, but Red Dead Online wasn’t introduced until a month later. The same strategy was used for GTA V, with GTA Online arriving several weeks after the base game’s release.
With that in mind, it’s reasonable to expect that a multiplayer component could be added to GTA 6 sometime after launch. However, it will be interesting to see how Rockstar handles GTA Online, which is still a major revenue generator for the company. The game is already set to receive another expansion soon, meaning Rockstar will need to balance support for the existing experience with the rollout of its next-generation title.
