Curry Barker’s horror movie Obsession has been scaring audiences on the big screen since its release on May 15, 2026. Barker, Michael Johnston, and Inde Navarrette may have been lesser-known names to moviegoers, but they brilliantly brought the film’s uniquely gripping horror story to life. The movie has earned a groundbreaking $224 million (as of June 8, 2026) at the box office on a $750k budget.
The film’s strong word of mouth is reflected in its rare box office achievement during its second and third weekends. It has earned a 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, an 8.1 rating on IMDb as of June 8, 2026, and an A- grade on CinemaScore, all of which are highly impressive.

In Obsession, Michael Johnston’s character, Bear, buys a supernatural toy called One Wish Willow and wishes for his childhood friend Nikki, played by Inde Navarrette, to fall in love with him. However, his desire for Nikki’s love comes at a deadly cost. Many viewers likely missed some of the references Barker hid throughout the film. Here are a few interesting hidden details from the movie.
1. Nikki’s Hansel and Gretel Story Hints She Liked Bear as a Brother

In a particularly disturbing scene, Inde Navarrette’s Nikki plays a drunken game of Jenga during a party at Ian’s house. During the game, she recites a violent and incestuous version of the famous Hansel and Gretel story. Earlier in the movie, it is established that Nikki sees Bear as her “little brother.” The inclusion of this disturbing story suggests that Nikki is struggling to view their relationship as normal, given her original feelings toward him.
Curry Barker shared with Polygon that he wanted the story to be about Hansel and Gretel, explaining, “And so that’s kind of that, like brother and sister being together. It’s not right and it’s not supposed to happen, but it is. And that’s kind of the movie.” So, yes, Nikki views their relationship as a toxic, sexual one between a brother and a sister.
2. Curry Barker’s Clever Hint at Man vs Bear Internet Analogy

Curry Barker was not especially subtle about the film’s reference to the viral Man vs. Bear internet discourse. He named his lead character Bear. The Man vs. Bear debate asked whether women would prefer to encounter a random bear or a random man if they were alone in the woods. Many women chose the bear because its threat felt more predictable.
The theory suggests that men can pose danger in more unpredictable ways. They may seem harmless, but they can disguise obsession as love, which is exactly what the central character, Bear, does in Obsession. He does not appear to be a monster, but Barker reveals his manipulative nature in one key scene. When the real Nikki takes control and asks him to kill her, he responds angrily, “What’s so wrong with being with me?”
3. Nikki Was Possessed by Bear’s Dead Cat Sandy

One of the wildest Obsession theories suggests that Nikki was actually possessed by Bear’s dead cat, Sandy. In the opening scenes, Bear finds his dead cat, puts her in a bag, and throws her away like trash. However, Nikki brings Sandy back — first symbolically, with an altar in her honor, and later, possibly in a literal sense. If Sandy is in fact possessing Nikki, she may be reacting to the way Bear discarded her so carelessly and to how quickly he replaced that loss with a wish for a girl to love him more than anyone else in the world.
According to the theory, Sandy compels Nikki to feed Bear Sandy’s dead body as meat in one of the film’s most disgusting scenes. In that reading, she forces him to consume what he once treated as trash. Several details seem to support this interpretation: Nikki’s eyes glow in the dark like a cat’s, and she displays feline behaviors such as watching Bear sleep, sniffing at things, moving quietly, and waiting anxiously for him by the door. She also appears to eat cat food in the kitchen.
4. Nikki Mimicked The Waitress While Watching a Movie With Bear

When Bear and Ian are at the diner, Bear notices a waitress wearing a vintage red diner uniform. He practices his proposal to Nikki with the waitress. Later in the movie, Nikki appears in the same outfit while lying in bed with Bear and watching a movie.
Nikki’s outfit represents Bear’s desire for a specific aesthetic in women. The film reinforces this idea through her costume changes after she becomes possessed. She trades her minimalist clothing and muted colors for more sexualized outfits and brighter colors. This is not the real Nikki, but rather an idealized version of her shaped by Bear’s fantasies.
5. Nikki ‘Became’ Sarah in The End After The Revelation

Once Bear goes out to meet Sarah, Nikki no longer hides her darker side. Wanting Bear all to herself, she brutally kills Sarah to eliminate the competition. As Bear begins to feel trapped in this relationship with this twisted version of Nikki, she becomes even more disturbing. She wears Sarah’s outfit and skins her body to replicate her tattoos and hair exactly. In effect, she transforms herself into Sarah and longs for Bear’s love in the same way Sarah once did.
In the climax, this twisted version of Nikki does exactly what Sarah likely would have done with the One Wish Willow: she wishes for Bear to love her as much as she loves him. This transforms him into Wish Bear.
6. The One Wish Willow Has a Different Jingle Throughout the Movie

When Bear first comes across the One Wish Willow, it plays a cheerful 1980s-style jingle. However, director Curry Barker included an Easter egg in the jingle that many fans may have missed. After the first jingle, each time Bear tries another One Wish Willow, the tune is different. In an interview with Maddi Lou, Barker explained that these later jingles are darker versions of the original.
He said they served as a “warning” to Bear not to use the One Wish Willow to reverse the curse. Interestingly, Barker noted that the jingle heard when Freaky Nikki uses the item in the film’s climax is the original one, indicating that it was ready to grant her wish.
7. Curry Barker’s Overlooked Cameo in Obsession

Curry Barker makes a cameo in the movie that many viewers likely will not notice. After Bear grows fed up with Nikki’s obsessive behavior, he calls the makers of the One Wish Willow to find out what he can do. The box includes a customer service number, and his call connects to a call center employee who handles the situation in the same unhelpful way such interactions often play out in real life.
The employee shows little concern for Bear’s problem and tells him they can only register a complaint, which is of no real help. Interestingly, Barker himself played the call center employee in this hilarious sequence. Speaking to Polygon about the scene, Barker said, “It was me. I recorded that dialogue in my room, way after we shot the movie. I was editing in my room so I was able to just do whatever I wanted with it. I just got my phone out and I was just like, ‘Hey, what’s up?’ It was written dialogue, but I just changed it up because I was the writer, editor, director.”
8. TABI Cat on One Wish Willow Stands for That’s a Bad Idea

Besides its connection to the saying “Curiosity killed the cat,” the makers of One Wish Willow also have a real-world link to Curry Barker’s YouTube days. In a conversation with Forbes, actress Inde Navarrette explained that the company name, TABI Cat Curiosities, is a reference to Barker’s comedy series That’s a Bad Idea, which he created with Obsession star Cooper Tomlinson. She explained:
What the answer is that it was Curry’s own personal Easter egg to pay homage to That’s a Bad Idea. So, T-A-B-I [is the acronym for] That’s a Bad Idea, the skit comedy that he does with Cooper Tomlinson, who plays Ian in the film. So, it was an homage to that.
That’s a Bad Idea is also the name of Barker and Tomlinson’s new production company. It is involved in the production of Barker’s next movie, Anything but Ghosts, partnering with Blumhouse.
9. Bear’s Wish Comes True Because He Didn’t Read the Instructions

The One Wish Willow did not work for many people, likely because of one confusing line in the instructions on the box. The instructions read, “Spark the middle, and break it in half.” In reality, all Bear had to do was break it in half, which he did because he never read the instructions. Those who did read them may have tried to create a spark in the middle by burning it, accidentally destroying the willow’s powers. Ironically, Bear’s failure to read the instructions properly led him into an even bigger nightmare.
In a sense, the One Wish Willow isn’t a ‘Monkey’s Paw’ as many make it out to be. If you visit the FAQ section, the rules for using the willow are clearly explained: one wish per life per person, no take-backs, and no wishes involving time manipulation, resurrection, immortality, or the creation of more One Wish Willows.
Most importantly, you have to be extremely careful about what you wish for. As the FAQ states, “TABI Cat Curiosities is not responsible for wish misinterpretations.” In other words, the willow grants wishes literally. Bear wished for Nikki to “love him more than anyone else in the world,” and he got exactly that. The disastrous events that followed were the result of that obsessive love. In many ways, it mirrored Bear’s own obsession with Nikki from the very beginning.
10. Bear Dies The Same Way His Cat Died in The Movie

The film’s final scene connects directly to its beginning. In the climax, Bear attempts to kill himself by swallowing a lethal dose of oxycodone pills. However, he cannot go through with it and immediately tries to save himself. Once he becomes possessed, though, Wish Bear chooses to love Nikki in accordance with her wish. This leads to him dying in her arms, which ultimately lifts the curse.
Bear dies in the same way as his cat. Earlier in the film, it is suggested that Sandy died after ingesting Bear’s oxycodone pills. Bear is therefore responsible for Sandy’s death through his own carelessness. Likewise, his careless handling of the wish ultimately leads to his own death and the deaths of his friends. Through this cat metaphor, Curry Barker underscores why Bear suffers such brutal consequences.
