Directed by Craig Gillespie (Cruella, I, Tonya), Supergirl is the second film in the rebooted DC Universe after James Gunn’s 2025 blockbuster Superman. Supergirl follows Kara Zor-El (Milly Alcock) aka Supergirl as she teams up with Ruthye (Eve Ridley) to track down a race of intergalactic human traffickers called the Brigands, whose leader, Krem (Matthias Schoenaerts), killed Ruthye’s family and poisoned Kara’s beloved dog, Krypto.
After tracking down the Brigands, Kara and Ruthye find themselves facing off with him on a planet that alternates between a green and a yellow sun, presenting a unique challenge for Kara, as her Supergirl powers are strengthened by the yellow sun but weakened by the green sun.

Supergirl Ending Explained
After being captured by the Brigands, Ruthye escapes her cell and frees bounty hunter Lobo (Jason Momoa). She goes to the armory to retrieve her father’s sword and confronts Krem on the ship’s deck, though he quickly intercepts her and plans to execute her.
However, before Krem can kill Ruthye, Kara appears in the classic Supergirl outfit, and a scuffle ensues, causing Ruthye to fall overboard. Krem shoots Kara with specially designed Kryptonite darts to weaken her, but before he can kill her, Lobo swoops in and kills his mark, throws Krem overboard, and blows up the ship.

As the ship crashes, Kara recharges with the power of the yellow sun. As she rescues the brides from the wreckage of the crashed ship, the remaining Brigands circle Ruthye, who wants to fight Krem. However, before she can do so, Kara defeats the Brigands and knocks out Krem.
Ruthye wants to kill Krem, but Kara convinces her not to, saying that revenge won’t actually help her feel better and she will have to live with the trauma of killing him for the rest of her life. After Ruthye walks away, Kara returns to get the antidote for the poison and kills Krem, saying that it was for her dog and what he did to Ruthye’s family. Lobo watches in the distance, applauding Kara before riding off.
Back on Ruthye’s homeworld, they administer the antidote to Krypto and he recovers. Kara says she is going to go back home to Earth, and Ruthye says that she will live with her aunt and start to make swords like her father. Kara decides to invite Ruthye out for one last night of celebration before going back to Earth.

When Kara gets back to Earth, her cousin, Superman (David Corenswet), is waiting for her in her apartment. She tells him that she is going to stick around for a while, following his advice to make Earth feel more like her home.
What does the Supergirl ending mean for the DC Universe?
Now that Kara has decided to stay on Earth with her cousin and awoke her desire to do “good,” she seems to be embracing her destiny to become a protector of the people of Earth. With James Gunn’s sequel to his Superman film, Man of Tomorrow, coming out in summer 2027, we can hopefully look forward to seeing Supergirl and Superman team up to fight baddies together. The show also does not say where Lobo is heading after collecting his bounty, leaving the door wide open for Momoa to appear again as the Main Man in future DC Universe projects.
As the second film in James Gunn’s new DC Universe, Supergirl sets a precedent for what this interconnected world will be. Although it is mostly a standalone adventure, its cameo from anchor character Superman and teaser for a likely team-up tell us what we can expect in future entries, and we’re excited to see where Gunn and co. take the universe from here.
